This isn’t your Dorothy’s Kansas anymore. This two-part film, directed by the visionary Jon M. Chu, delves into the untold story of Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda (Ariana Grande) – the green-skinned girl destined to become the Wicked Witch of the West, and her bubbly blonde counterpart. The trailer, released on Wednesday, soars with the promise of magic, friendship, and a whole lot of defying gravity.

We all know the iconic image of Dorothy’s ruby slippers clicking their way down the yellow brick road. But “Wicked” flips the script, taking us back to Oz before the arrival of our pigtailed heroine. The trailer offers glimpses of a vibrant, fantastical land teeming with fantastical creatures and hidden wonders. We see a nervous Glinda offering words of comfort to a fiercely independent Elphaba, whose emerald skin sets her apart from the crowd. Yet, a spark of defiance ignites in Elphaba’s eyes as she declares, “I’m not afraid. It’s the Wizard who should be afraid of me.”

A Story of Friendship and Defiance

This isn’t just another story about good versus evil. “Wicked” promises a complex exploration of friendship, societal expectations, and the power to choose your own destiny. The trailer hints at a blossoming bond between Glinda and Elphaba, a friendship that may face challenges but promises to be the heart of the film.

The project boasts a star-studded cast alongside Grande and Erivo. Michelle Yeoh, Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Jeff Goldblum, and Bowen Yang round out the impressive ensemble. News from CinemaCon last month revealed an emotional presentation that left both Chu and Grande teary-eyed. The director himself spoke of a “magical land of sights and sounds” that will “astonish” and “lift your spirits,” with moments that might even “break your heart.”

Mark your calendars, because on November 27th, the emerald curtain rises, and the untold story of Oz unfolds. Prepare to be swept away by a tale of friendship, defiance, and the magic that lies within us all.
